Milford was officially established in 1864, when J.L. Davison opened the first post office. Milford is located in Seward County, in southeastern Nebraska and is served by U.S. Highway 6 and State Highway 15. A direct highway access connects Milford with I-80, three miles north. Milford is 22 miles west of Lincoln, and 80 miles southwest of Omaha. Milford is 1,452 feet above sea level and its terrain is level to gently rolling. Loess plains with fertile black soil are predominant in the west and south, with glacial drift hills in the east and north. Drainage is good. Approximately 302,632 people live within Seward County and the contiguous counties of Butler, Fillmore, Lancaster, Polk, Saline and York. Basic economic activities of Milford, a college town, include manufacturing, education, agriculture and cattle and hog raising. The primary retail trade area of Milford extends approximately three miles north, two miles, east, five miles south and ten miles west—and contains 3,400 people. Retail firms in the community reported annual net taxable retail sales of $11,024,945 in 1998. Seward County reported net taxable retail sales to be $75,043,381 in 1998. |
